How do you, as an unknown brand, manage to build a strong domain with high-quality backlinks in English-speaking countries within a period of 1–2 years? On this website, we chose a digital PR approach and were able to build up more than 15,000 backlinks within approx. 1.5 years without active outreach.
Initial scenario
We aimed to scale one of our own projects in the English-speaking market. The challenge was that our domain was relatively new and had no authority, meaning there were few high-authority websites linking to ours. In the niche where we wanted to rank, the top positions on Google were occupied by websites with an average domain rating (a metric used to measure domain authority) of 50-80. Therefore, we needed a solution to build natural backlinks through digital PR as cost-effectively as possible.
Our approach
We observed that a specific type of content, which could be produced with manageable effort compared to other content assets typically chosen for digital PR approaches, performed exceptionally well. This type of content led to a significant increase in domain ratings for established websites. Consequently, we decided to develop a partially automated process for this methodology and create various statistical reports. Initially, we tested different formats over a period of three months, manually producing all formats.
Over the past 1.5 years, we achieved a domain rating of 82, placing the website in the top 10% on paper. We secured various mentions (with and without backlinks) from some of the most authoritative websites, including HubSpot, Business Insider, and many others. This strategy can be adapted for various industries and sectors, providing a solid foundation for digital PR.
